Lexicon Cappuccinum

Bio-Bibliography Volume Update

The project of further developing the new Lexicon Capuccinum, which is in fact an update of the one published in 1951, began in 2004 following the decision of General Minister Br. John Corriveau and his Council. The office’s work also continued under the generalate of Br. Mauro Jöhri. A new edition was necessary, both because of the extraordinary internationalization the Order experienced during the 20th century and because of its altered aspect following the changes from the Second Vatican Council, the new Constitutions of 1968 and the various PCOs. The last phase of the process of revising, completing and integrating the entries began in 2022, with a mandate by General Minister Br. Roberto Genuin and his Council; this led to the publication of Volume II. The Bio-Bibliography of the Lexicon in 2025 was presented pro manuscripto on September 11, 2024, during an assembly at the General Chapter.

Like that of 1951, the current Lexicon is intended to be a reference tool on various aspects of the history of the Capuchin Order. In Volume II, the Bio-Bibliography features portrayals of the friars, Capuchin Poor Clares and other persons close to the life of the Order who have distinguished themselves particularly. Altogether, the current edition collects 4,302 bio-bibliographical profiles. The publication of Volume I, which covers circumscriptions, friaries and thematic entries(theology, spirituality, philosophy, pharmacy, medicine, herbalism, architecture, sculpture, painting, etc.) is planned for 2028. The Lexicon is intended first and foremost for friars of the Order, but also for scholars interested in learning and delving into our history.

The Office of the Lexicon Capuccinum is located at the International College of St. Lawrence of Brindisi in Rome and since 2022 has been led by Director Br. Gianluca Crudo, assisted by an international academic commission.
