The event was intended to commemorate the 800th anniversary of the death of St. Francis of Assisi and, at the same time, to celebrate Pakistan\u2019s 79th Independence Day.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting, conducted by Rev. Fr. Asif Sardar, Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Lahore, drew a significant turnout of Muslim scholars and leaders, pastors from various Christian denominations, Capuchin friars, diocesan priests, religious sisters, teachers, youth groups, and numerous guests. The ceremony was designed to promote interreligious dialogue, national unity, peace, love, and mutual respect.<\/p>\n<h5>The Candle and the Prayer of St. Francis<\/h5>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the opening, the guests of honor and Rev. Fr. Asif Sardar lit a candle, a symbol of peace, hope, and unity. The Vicar General then invited those present to draw inspiration from the prayer of St. Francis, asking God to make them instruments of peace: capable of bringing love where hatred prevails, unity where division exists, hope where despair reigns, and light where there is darkness.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his remarks, he emphasized that truly incorporating this prayer into daily life can transform each person into a promoter of peace and harmony in society, as well as of love and unity throughout the country.<\/p>\n<h5>St. Francis and His Meeting with the Sultan<\/h5>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among the keynote speeches was one by Maulana Asim Makhdoom, President of the Kul Masalak Ulma Board of Pakistan. He stated that dialogue is preferable to war, noting that a conflict may allow one to conquer a fortress or a country and produce a temporary result, while dialogue allows one to win hearts, overcome hatred, build trust, and lay the foundation for lasting peace.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Makhdoom also referred to the historic meeting between St. Francis of Assisi and the Sultan of Egypt, al-Malik al-Kamil, describing it as an example of extraordinary relevance that still resonates today, 800 years later. That meeting demonstrated that people from different religious traditions can come together, listen to one another, and engage with respect and a spirit of peace, even in the face of profound differences.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ceremony marks the second major event organized by the Archdiocese of Lahore as part of the Jubilee Year, which was inaugurated in May 2026 by Archbishop Khalid Rehmat, OFM Cap. During his inaugural homily, the archbishop praised the service of the Franciscan and Capuchin missionaries, noting that four different Franciscan congregations are actively working in Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Referring to the theme <em>St. Francis: Man of Peace and Brother to All, <\/em>he had illustrated the radical nature of the saint\u2019s witness, who went so far as to welcome even death as a sister and asked to be laid naked on the ground as a sign of unity with creation.<\/p>\n<h5>Minority Rights and National Unity<\/h5>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While outlining the initiative\u2019s objectives, Rev. P. Shahzad Khokhar explained that the event (which was also linked to Minorities\u2019 Day) served as a concrete expression of peace, dialogue, equality, and national unity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dr. Majeed Abel emphasized the importance of delving deeper into the philosophy of St. Francis, inviting young people in particular to draw inspiration from his life of simplicity, humility, and service to humanity, in order to contribute to the building of a peaceful society. Mr. Asghar Atif reiterated that mutual understanding is essential for addressing and resolving differences, since war and violence do not produce stable solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maulvi Hussain Gul Wari concluded by paying tribute to the historic role and contribution of Christians, emphasizing that the history of Pakistan cannot be considered complete without acknowledging the contributions of its minorities.<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program featured several celebratory moments. Under the guidance of Rev. Fr. Qaisar Feroz, OFM Cap., the Capuchin Youth of Moman Pura, in Lahore Cantonment, reenacted some significant episodes from the life of St. Francis through a prayer song dedicated to peace.
