Franciscan Institute of Spirituality

The Franciscan Institute of Spirituality, promoted since its beginning (1970) by the Capuchin friars, was born from a widespread desire concerning the present renewal in the Franciscan family in the field of theological studies and is imbued in the centre of the faculty of Theology of the Pontifical University Antonianum. The Institute promotes scientific research in the diverse fields of theology, of spirituality, of Franciscanism and of formation in the consecrated life. At the core of the academic proposal, it also offers study visits to Franciscan places, most significantly (Assisi, Umbria, Valle Reatina, La Verna, "Franciscan Rome", etc.). The Institute is likewise the sponsor of Days of Study and International Symposia on themes of spiritual theology and Franciscanism.

With the license course (2 years) they obtain the necessary preparation for teaching the first cycle of theology. They acquire the instruments for scientific research as a prelude to the possibility of doctoral research. They enter into possession of the requisites for the assumption of the professional roles of consultation for the administration and the programming of cultural centres and archives. Finally, they acquire the basic elements in formative dynamics.

The students of the 3rd cycle, or the doctorate, are obliged to attend laboratory-seminars, whose scope is to guide the students in the selection of the theme, and in the processing of, the doctoral texts. The cycle ends with the presentation and the defense of the thesis.

The masters in formation prepares the work of the formator in the area of the consecrated life and in the inspiration of the Christian community. The proposed path is placed in the Franciscan perspective. After the duration of one year, the master is advised how one might carry out educative responsibilities on many levels: initial formation (novitiate, juniorate), special formation, ongoing formation. Those who are in possession of one triennial bachelors degree may apply for this course.

The Diploma in Spirituality course (two years) supplies, besides a basic theological formation, a preparation in the disciplines proper to Christian spirituality, Franciscan and psycho-pedagogical. In particular, it is useful for the formators to the consecrated life. It supplies qualified opportunities for updating and professional retraining for those who can enter into this and for those who are in possession of the title of superior middle study.

The variety of the academic proposals allows for the organization of personalized sabbatical years or of avenues of updating that allow for one's own professional updating.
