Malawi,
Africa – Most of the people in Malawi depend on agriculture
for their subsistence. The draught in the region has been so severe
that four million people are facing hunger and starvation. While
there has been some help for the hundreds-of-thousands of famine-stricken
people in Malawi, many of our Capuchin parishes are in the remote
villages and sub-stations and thus help does not reach them. There
are over 100,000 people in these parishes, who are facing hunger.
Due to the massive nature of the hunger, our friaries in the region
do not have the resources to provide sufficient food. They have
requested assistance from our Economic Solidarity fund.
Kenya,
Africa – Capuchin Bishop, Paul Darmanin, has sent an urgent
appeal for help to the Minister General to purchase some food for
the starving people throughout his diocese. The magnitude of the
starvation is so extensive that it is beyond the means of the diocese
so they are asking for outside assistance. There are hundreds of
thousands who will die from this famine unless they receive some
food and medicine.
